Recently I put up a couple social media posts asking what my connections felt would be the most important thing they want and expect from their real estate agent. Initially I thought many people’s first response would be “someone who listens.” Well, I was wrong. The most popular answer was “Honesty.”
An honest REALTOR®! It is so simple and yet so many people feel they do not get this from the person representing one of the most important financial decisions of their lives.
There is a key word missing here, this word is transparency. The thing is, most REALTORS® ARE honest, the problem sometimes lies (no pun intended) that they are not transparent enough to get that across to their clients. Maybe it is an agent that is afraid to upset a buyer or seller, or just doesn’t quite know enough about the business yet or the market itself to prep them for worst case scenarios. It is OK, to admit to not having the answer and in turn say “I will find it.”
While there are always unforeseen problems that can come up, even with the most seasoned agent’s sales, being aware of potential worst case scenarios can help prevent a shock to the system or to the client’s bank account. This preparation can help decide if right now really is the right time to even make a financial decision like buying or selling a home.
At the end of the day, every person, every home and every situation is different. You, as the consumer need to have all your ducks in a row and this means having a REALTOR® who can guide you in the direction that is best for you and not be afraid to tell you like it is, good, bad, or ugly, so that you can be best prepared for what you are dealing with and how to go about it.
